Dear Professor Lam,

I am very much saddened by the passing of Wah Kit. Whilst in UMU, we always shared ideas and thoughts on our work and life. I was inspired by his integrity, warm friendship, rapport with patients, resourcefulness in conducting research, dedication in educating medical students and trainees, and effectiveness in organization and management of departmental matters. Last but not least, I admire the stoicism and courage with which he battled his illnesses.

The gift of life, however dear, must sometime pass away. Yet love and memories remain. May he rest in peace.

Mr Billy Lam Chung Lun (Former CEO of the HK Airport Authority and Managing Director of the Urban Renewal Authority)

It’s very sad to learn of Wah Kit’s passing after putting up a brave fight against a long illness for over 37 years!

He was a great scholar, professor, physician, teacher, mentor, unassuming leader, real gentleman, courageous fighter and, to me, a respected good friend for over sixty years. We were both at Queen’s College (‘60-‘67) and then at Ricci Hall ('68-'70). He spent his entire working and retirement life at the Medical Faculty of the University. One highlight of his career was in 2007, when he was inaugurated the first Mok Hing Yiu Endowed Professor of Respiratory Medicine. I had the honor of being invited to the ceremony and I was really deeply touched by the warmth, respect and admiration his students and colleagues held for him.

May he now join his wife, Sau Chi, who passed away last year, and RIP.

Wah-Kit had been my close friend since 1982, friendship between us having been lasting for 40 years. I still have clear memory that the first time we met, we had enthusiastic discussion about the collaboration between Hong Kong and mainland China. I really appreciate his great contribution and generosity in supporting 20 young physicians and scientists to attend APSR in the 1990s, in which time mainland China was not fully developed for the individual scholars to afford the expenses.

Please pass my warm regard to the whole family and I cherish deeply in memory of Wah-Kit. I couldn’t forget his dedications both in Hong Kong SAR and mainland China in respiratory diseases.

Prof KK Cheng (University of Birmingham)

Though my interactions with Professor Lam were restricted to when I was a clinical medical student some 40 years ago, I had clear memory of a kind and wise teacher who was highly respected and much loved by my peers. He had the wonderful skills of explaining some difficult concepts in ways that would be easily understood by the uninitiated, and putting them at ease instead of putting them down in the process. He always seemed to be able to find time for students despite his punishing schedules and was as ever patient with us when we caught him at his busy moments. Having been a medical educator myself for more than three decades, there have been many moments when I wish I could remotely match Professor Lam in his wonderful attributes. RIP.

Dr Nelson Wat (Caritas Medical Centre, Hospital Authority)

I first met Professor WK Lam when I joined University Medical Unit (UMU); Queen Mary Hospital in 1990. He was my mentor, teacher and supervisor during my physician training period (1990 to 1993), especially the three- month rotation of respiratory medicine.

Professor Lam is a gentleman, scholar and leader to me. He always worked seriously on every matter. However, I was so lucky to be allowed performing bronchoscopy on a patient during my rotation under his supervision. He was so solemn at work but I could feel his kindness deep inside him if you would have the opportunity working under him. He once remarked, “Research is to study patient records systematically.”

Although I was not trained as a respiratory physician, I had witnessed many nostalgic moments of Professor Lam while working in the same Department of UMU for 18 years (1990 - 2008). Besides, I had the rare chance of appreciating the great achievements of his wife, Dr SC Leung at Grantham Hospital when I deputised the Hospital Chief Executive post in 2008.

Professor WK Lam will always be remembered …

Prof W K Lam not only had great academic achievements; he was very courageous and resilient in battling his own numerous tumours for over 30 years. Any of these adversities could have defeated a lesser mortal. He was truly a superman.

Prof To Luen Bik (Royal Adelaide Hospital/University of Adelaide)

It is with sadness that I learnt about Prof Lam's passing. We were at Queen's College together, Prof Lam a year ahead of me. Prof Lam was known throughout the school for his scholarship but he also impressed with how he always carries with him a dignity and authority that belies his age. Many years later I was in London sitting the MRCP. It turned out that I have no place to stay but Prof Lam was also in London at that time and he offered me his room to sleep for free. Not only that, he even cooked for me! His extraordinary generosity was a balm in a difficult time of my professional life. He never made a deal of it in the many times we have met since. His uprightness and kindness, alongside his scholarship and servant attitude, I shall miss very much.

Very sad to learn about the passing of Prof Lam Wah Kit.

We were colleagues in the Medical Unit at United Christian Hospital in the late 70's.

He was a hard working and a highly respected doctor and much appreciated by colleagues and patients. He went on to develop further in his specialty at HKU and QMH. He was a learned and kind doctor with impeccable medical ethics.

Those who knew him will feel the loss of a such a good person and doctor.

Prof Andrew Elder (Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh)

Having met Professor Lam on several visits to Hong Kong over the years, I wanted to add my personal condolences and also those of the Fellows and Members of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. Professor Lam was always a most gracious, generous and thoughtful host to myself and many other colleagues who visited Hong Kong from Scotland and the UK, and was clearly deeply respected by his colleagues and trainees. I will remember him with admiration for his many achievements, as an outstanding doctor, and as a good colleague and friend, in the true spirit of the long established relationship between Edinburgh and Hong Kong medicine.

Prof Cheung Tak Fai Raymond

It has been my privilege to be taught by Professor Lam as his medical student and my honour to become his colleague since I joined the Department of Medicine. His excellent communication skills, strong knowledge of medicine, great enthusiasm and empathetic personality have made him one of our greatest teachers in medicine. As a senior colleague, his dedication and commitment to excellence in teaching, research, clinical services and administrative skills are exemplary. His achievements have been an inspiration to me. Even the best doctor is not immune from illnesses. “Doctors make the worst patients” does not apply to Professor Lam. During my initial working days as a surgical intern in 1987, I was asked to take a blood sample and set up a heparin block for him in the private ward. Professor Lam reassured me not to be apprehensive because his peripheral veins were big. He even advised me how to insert the needle. I shall always remember him as an accomplished academician, a master clinician, the best teacher, a great leader and a good mentor.

Prof Karen Lam

Dear WK,

It’s been my honour to be your colleague for over 40 years and to be your deputy when you were the Head of Medicine. You have always impressed me with your sharp clinical acumen as a seasoned physician, and your concise and precise presentations as a most effective speaker. Usually soft-spoken and quite serious, you actually have a fine sense of humour. It’s no wonder that your teaching was so popular with the students. Always gentlemanly and collegial, you are highly regarded by us all within the department and, indeed, within the medical community. We will always miss you.

Prof Mary S.M. Ip

Professor Wah-kit Lam was a leading pulmonologist who has dedicated most of his professional life to the advancement of respiratory medicine through teaching, clinical service, research and advocacy. He led the Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Hong Kong and Queen Mary Hospital for many years till 2008 when he officially retired, though he continued to be an avid teacher of MBBS students up till days before he was taken ill to the hospital some months ago. He has further impacted upon the development of respiratory medicine in Hong Kong through his instrumental roles in the foundation of local and regional respiratory societies and subspecialty training in the HK College of Physicians.

I believe the best way to thank him for his mentorship and guidance all these years would be for us to continue to bring forth his work ethics , professionalism and kindness. May he rest in peace and happy reunion with his wife.

Wah Kit will be deeply missed for he was such a great colleague, teacher, clinician and academician. Despite his achievements in almost every aspect of his life, he remained one of the most humble and grounded persons I have known. Wah Kit will stay in the thoughts of all of us who have been inspired by his vision and courage, and kindness and humanism. The legacy that he left behind will continue to be a shining beacon for many generations of doctors to come.
